Project Background

Curraheen Hospital is a three-storey hospital and hospice facility designed to accommodate 75 hospital beds and 44 hospice beds. The building also includes rehabilitation and therapy services, community based services, a pharmacy, education centre, family support, mortuary, general stores, laundry, waste management, chaplaincy, catering services and restaurant, and general administration along with all ancillary services.

The Challenge

The main challenges for this project were durability and high levels of acoustic separation required due to the need for patient and staff privacy. As with all healthcare facilities, large volumes of services and associated risers and ducts, required levels of fire resistance appropriate to the design criteria.

The Approach

Durability and acoustic criteria were met in the main corridor and ward areas by installing GypWall partition systems. To each side of the Gypframe metal stud framework we incorporated an inner layer of Gyproc SoundBloc plasterboard and an outer layer of Gyproc DuraLine impact resistant plasterboard. Isover acoustic insulation was inserted into the Gypframe metal stud framework cavity. Gyproc ShaftWall Systems were used in the service riser and elevator shaft areas to maintain the fire compartmentation as set out in the project designs.
Bespoke detailing was provided by Gyproc Technical to accommodate architectural detailing such as shadow gaps and recessed skirting, while still maintaining the integrity of the partitions in terms of offering fire resistance. Gyproc CasoLine MF Ceiling System components were also used to create bulkhead features in the main atrium, showcasing the Gluelam beams at roof level.
