10 Things to Know About… Gyproc’s Story on RTÉ

We are proud to announce that Gyproc is featured in the second episode of RTÉ’s the award-winning RTÉ science series, 10 Things to Know About... 

Presented by Fergus McAuliffe, in season 11 the episode titled Building Ireland is broadcasted on RTÉ One on the 17th November at 8:30pm.  This episode takes a closer look at gypsum and explores the story of this material that shapes our homes and used by Gyproc in the production of its building solutions.

The episode takes viewers underground to Drummond mine in County Monaghan, where gypsum has been extracted for nearly a century. This natural mineral, formed hundreds of millions of years ago, is now mined as an essential component in the production of plaster and plasterboard, used in the construction of homes, schools, hospitals, and offices across the country. 

As Ireland is facing a housing and infrastructure crisis, and for every house we build, we need approximately 300 tonnes of raw materials. This episode highlights the role gypsum plays in meeting that demand responsibly.

From its origins in the 1930s, to the opening of Ireland’s first plasterboard plant in 1947, Gyproc has been a pillar of Irish construction. Today, the company continues to lead the industry in material innovation and sustainable practices. 

Gyproc has consistently invested in cutting-edge facilities, new mines, and modern technologies to support the evolving needs of Irish builders and homeowners.
