Project Background

South West Acute Hospital was designed to provide an environmentally sensitive and sustainable solution. The facility incorporates sustainable features and technologies, including renewable energy, passive H&V features, and site sensitive design. The scheme was designed as a concrete frame over four levels, linked by internal glazed atria. It comprises of three blocks over four levels, and provides 300 en-suite public beds with associated support facilities.

The Challenge

Ensuring all interfaces between the partition systems as specified, and the other building elements, was a complex challenge to the installers. There was a large variety of partition types with differing build heights, sound reduction and fire performance criteria to be met.

The Approach

With support from Gyproc Technical, suitable partition specifications were generated incorporating Gyproc Rigidur plasterboard as the face layer on many of the partitions. Gyproc Rigidur fibre based plasterboard was chosen due to its extreme robustness and durability, making it an ideal lining plasterboard for buildings with high levels of public traffic. Fire, acoustics and duty ratings were satisfied through the use of GypWall Classic with Gyproc WallBoard, Gyproc SoundBloc, Gyproc Moisture Resistant Plasterboards, and Isover acoustic insulation.
Gyproc Rigidur and Gyproc SoundBloc plasterboards were incorporated into the partitions to ensure high levels of acoustic reduction, and to offer a partition severe duty rating. Gyproc ShaftWall was installed in service risers, service ducts and elevator shafts where specific fire resistance performance criteria had to be met, and where necessary, structural steel sections were encased in Gyproc FireLine to offer the necessary fire protection. Gyproc CasoLine MF Ceiling systems were used extensively throughout the building with Gyproc WallBoard and Gyproc Moisture Resistant WallBoard used as the lining plasterboard in relevant areas. Gyproc Hard Coat was used as the undercoat plaster to the blockwork with a finish application of Gyproc Carlite Ultra to provide a decorative and superior finish.
